Kutunza Kila Mmoja: Taking Care of Each Other

In this collaboration, Milk River Artist Bukuru Nyandwi collaborated with several artists to create pieces for a transformative installation at the VCU Institute for Contemporary Art’s cafe space. Bukuru worked with Milk River supporting artist Aimee Joyaux to create an edition of hand-sewn zines, and large digital collages. Artist Kate Fowler of Studio Two Three worked with Bukuru to produce repeat-printed banners hanging from the cafe ceiling. Bukuru worked with Milk River mentoring artist Barry O’Keefe to create a large community message board, and a series of botanical screen prints.

During the COVID pandemic, the ICA was looking bring life and warmth into their cafe space, and play with the architecture of their building. Bukuru Nyandwi’s work, especially exploring through painting the food culture of his family, felt like a perfect fit. Bukuru’s joyful, colorful recent watercolors were used as a starting point for a series of projects tailored to the scale and function of the ICA Cafe space.

Following installation at the ICA, several pieces from Kutunza Kila Mmoja found a new home at Anna Julia Cooper School in Richmond’s East End.
