VMFA FAMILY DAYS

A series of public projects and workshops for famlies, created in partnership with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

For 4 years Milk River Arts led community workshops at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts inspired by different collections within the museum. These projects brought together community members of all ages with Milk River artists and mentors to co-create pieces inspired by techniques and themes from different art traditions around the world.

2016 Celebrate Latin American Art: Central America - Community Weaving.

Using scrap fabric and yarn, Milk River artists wrapped thousands of sticks into a giant outdoor loom to create a colorful, highly-textured natural tapestry.

2017 Celebrate the Art of Latin America: Caribbean - Tap Tap Bus Project

Inspired by the elaborately painted buses of Haiti which are used for public transportation, Milk River artists designed an original TapTap bus that we named WE ARE GOING PLACES.

2018 Celebrate African and African American Art: Ethiopia - Community Stamped mural
Adapting imagery from architecture, media, maps, and cityscapes, Milk River artists created stamps that were used to produce an evocative collaborative mural in the style of Ethiopian-born artist Julie Mehretu.
